THE GOLDEN MISTAKE
“Eat up Mal. After you finish eating, I’m going to take you to Uncle Derek’s house so you can see your Aunt Lianne.”I said
Her face lit up as I mentioned Lianne’s name. “Auntie Lia is here!?” I smiled and nodded as I took a bite of my pancake. “Yay!” She cheered.
I looked over at Sean who was smiling down at her as she cheered. I smiled as I looked back down at my plate, cutting a piece of my pancake and placing it into my mouth.
“Okay princess. Settle down and eat,” Sean told her as he wiped the side of her mouth with a napkin. She stopped cheering.
“Okay daddy,” She said, giving him a wide grin before she shoved a piece of her pancake into her mouth.
“Mommy, are we there yet?” Malia asked me for like the millionth time.
I looked back at her and saw that she was brushing the hair of one her Barbie dolls. “Almost there baby girl,” I told her. “We’re about a minute away, think you can wait one more minute?”
“Yes!” She smiled as she continued to brush her Barbie’s hair. I smiled before I turned back in my seat. We finally arrived at Derek’s townhouse, which was not that far of a drive from Sean and I’s place. Sean parked the car next to Derek’s car, in front of the garage.
I took off my seatbelt and opened the car door, quickly exiting the car. I zipped up my jacket before closing the car door and opening the door for Malia. I unbuckled her from her car seat and picked her up. She wrapped her legs around my waist as I closed the car door.
I set Malia down on the ground and she quickly went up to Sean, taking his hand and holding it. I grinned as we began making our way to the front door. Malia let go of Sean’s hand and ran all the way to the front door. She went on her tiny shoes and raised up her hand, wiggling her fingers as she struggled to reach the doorbell. “Mommy! I need help!”
I chuckled lightly as I picked her up. She leaned forward and pressed the doorbell a couple of times. She pulled her hand away and looked at me, giving me a small smile. The door soon opened, revealing a very jubilant Lianne. “MaLia!” Lianne joyfully said.
“Auntie Lia!” Malia beamed as she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around Lianne. Lianne took her from my arms and wrapped her arms around her tightly.
“I missed you so much my beautiful goddaughter!” Lianne pulled her head back so she could look at Malia. “I missed you too Auntie Lia.”
Lianne gave her a small smile before turning her attention to Sean and I. “I swear, every time I see her, she looks more and more like Sean.” Lianne mentioned
Sean and I began laughing lightly.
“I’m serious!” Lianne smiled as she looked at Sean. “She has your blue eyes, dark brown hair, your nose, everything!”lianne said
She wasn’t lying. Malia looked exactly like Sean, no doubt about it.
“Oh, sorry! Come in! It’s pretty cold outside,” She said as she opened the door all the way. Sean and I entered the house, Lianne still holding Malia. I heard the door close behind me as I began to remove my sweater.
“No, wait! Keep your sweater on!” Sean quickly said, stopping me. I looked at him, confused, as I closed up my jacket again. “Why? We’re inside.”
“We’re not staying for long,” He told me as we walked into the living room. “But daddy! We just got here!” Malia complained.
“I know sweetheart,” He said as he walked over to where Lianne and Malia were. “Me and mommy are leaving, not you. You’re staying here with your Aunt and Uncle.”Sean said
She let out a small sigh of relief. “Okay! Where are you and mommy going?”Malia curiously asked
“I’m,” He began as he crouched down, taking Malia’s hand and holding it,”taking your mommy out on a date.”
I raised an eyebrow at him.
She leaned forward, curiosity flaring in her bright blue eyes. “A date? What’s a date?”Malia asked
“Well, a date is when two people get together to go somewhere to do something fun,” He explained to her, using small words so she could understand better.
“Ooo! Daddy, take me to a date!” She eagerly said, which caused him to chuckle. “Hmm.. I’ll think about it. Mommy and I are going to leave now. You behave, okay?”
She nodded as she leaned forward and kissed Sean’s cheek. “I love you princess, we’ll be back soon okay?Sean said
“Okay, I love you too daddy,” She smiled at him. He smiled at her as he got up from his crouching position. I walked over to Malia, leaning down to kiss her cheek.
“I love you baby girl. Have fun.” I stood up straight, pulling the bottom of my jacket down. “Love you mommy. Have fun on your date!”Malia said
I let out a small laugh. “Okay honey, I will.” I turned my head over to Lianne, who was beside Malia on the couch. “I guess I’ll see you later. Be sure to call me in case of an emergency. Okay?”I said
“Yes Ana, I know. This is not the first time I’ve babysat her,” She said as she began playing around with Malia’s hair.
“I know, I know. I’m sorry. I’ll see you later though.”I said
She smiled wide at me, not saying a word, which was weird. She had a look on her face that I could easily read. She knew something that I didn’t. “Okay…” I slowly said, as I knit my eyebrows.
I turned on my heel, walking over to where Sean was standing. “Let’s go,” I murmured as I walked past him. “Alright, see you girls later!” Sean waved at them.
“Bye!” Lianne and Malia both said as I opened the front door and walked out. I couldn’t help but feel curious as to what Lianne knew that I didn’t. A part of me wanted me to go back in there and ask her about it, but I didn’t.
I knew that whatever she knew that I didn’t, she would eventually tell me.
Sean brought me to our special place. Seaside Park, to be specific.
“I didn’t actually think we were going to the park,” I said to Sean as I got out of the car. I closed the door and watched as Sean walked over to where I was. “Yeah” he simply said
“Mhm, okay,” I grinned as I looked down and saw that he was holding a shopping bag. “What’s with the bag?”I asked
“Um I brought some stuff for us,” He answered as we began walking down the concrete path. “Stuff. What kind of stuff?” I questioned him further.
He smiled as he shook his head. “Don’t worry, you’ll find out in a little.”
I decided not to ask him anymore questions. We reached Lookout Point, taking a seat on the bench, which overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. Sean set down the bag on the ground as he sat down on the bench with me. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me closer to him.
We sat there in silence for a few minutes, just staring at the ocean and listening to the small waves. “This is nice,” Sean said, breaking the silence.
“Yeah,” I said softly. “It is.” I said softly
“So, like I said a little while ago. I brought some stuff for us.” He unwrapped his arm from around my shoulder as he bent down and opened the bag. I watched as he took out some books.
“Are those my Nicholas Sparks books?” I asked him as I grabbed one of the books from the small pile that was resting on his lap. I looked down at the book, reading the title.
“The Story Of Us”
“Yes,” He replied. “These are your books.” He took the book from my hands and put it back in the small pile. “Why did you bring them?”I asked
“Because,I thought that maybe, I would read them to you.”he answered
I gave him a blank look. “You wanna read them? To me? Am I five?” He began to laugh as he shook his head. “Let me rephrase that. I would like to read my favorite parts to you.”
I gaped at him. “Wait, you’ve read them?” I asked
He smiled and nodded “Yeah. They’re actually pretty good. I can see why you enjoy them so much,” He said.
“Okay,” I began,”Read me your favorite parts then. I wanna hear them.”I said
“Alright, but first I want to give you something.” He bent down and reached into the bag again, taking out a bigger book. “Is that a scrapbook? Did you make it?” He nodded as he placed the scrapbook on my lap.
“Before you say or do anything. Let me explain this whole thing. I wrote down my favorite parts or quotes from these books in this scrapbook. As I read them from the paper I wrote them on, I want you to follow along. I don’t want you to read ahead or go ahead, understand?” I nodded as I looked down at the scrapbook and read the title.
**The Story of Us**
Below the title was a quote that read:
“Every great love starts with a great story…”
“Okay, one page at a time. You ready?” I nodded. “Alright, open to the first page.” I opened the scrapbook and smiled as I saw a picture of Sean That was the day we went to Disney. I stared down at the picture, taking in all the details. Sean and I were holding hands, smiling as we looked at each other, not even bothering to look at the camera. I remember that day like it was yesterday.
I looked down at the box below it, following along as Sean read it.
“Their fingers seemed to fit together in just the right way-effortlessly clasped, like perfect complements,” He read aloud.
I turned the page, still smiling, as I saw the next picture. This time it was a picture of us at the karaoke club, kissing, the night of my eighteenth birthday. That was our very first kiss. Well, our first kiss that actually meant something to the both of us…..
